SUMMARY:The Irish and the Erie Canal: Building the Empire State\, Binding the Nation
DESCRIPTION:Thousands of Irish immigrants were recruited to build the Erie Canal’s most dangerous and challenging sections\, enduring grueling dawn-to-dusk labor under perilous conditions. The most difficult struggles were in the Montezuma marshes and in Lockport\, where Irish laborers risked life and limb blasting through miles of solid rock. Without their relentless grit\, this monumental project might never have succeeded\, delaying a massive transportation revolution that slashed shipping costs and bound the nation together by connecting the East to the Midwest. This talk tells the stories of these unheralded Irish builders—the true driving force behind the engineering marvel that transformed America.

DESCRIPTION:American Irish Historical Society (map)\nGoogle Calendar  ICS\n\nSince 2023\, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and former Poetry Editor of The New Yorker Paul Muldoon has led his extraordinary “How to Read a Poem” discussions at literary festivals and universities all over the world. At these very special gatherings\, participants meet to discuss poems published only that week in literary journals and magazines\, not just to glean their individual meanings but to reflect on where poetry as an art form has been – and where it’s going. \nFor nearly forty years\, Paul Muldoon has been Howard G. B. Clark Professor at Princeton\, teaching creative writing\, Irish literature\, songwriting and translation. He served as Oxford Professor of Poetry from 1999 to 2004 and Ireland Professor of Poetry from 2022 to 2025. His fifteen major collections of poetry\, published in America by Farrar\, Straus & Giroux\, include MOY SAND AND GRAVEL (winner of the Pulitzer Prize) and JOY IN SERVICE ON RUE TAGORE\, a New York Times Notable Book of 2024. He is the editor of many anthologies of poetry\, including\, most recently\, SCANTY PLOT OF GROUND: A BOOK OF SONNETS. \nPoems for discussion will be distributed at the session. No preparation or knowledge of poetry is necessary. The only prerequisite? Whether working independently or in collaboration with The Abbey\, Dublin\, Signature Theatre\, New York or Geffen Playhouse\, Los Angeles\, the company brings fresh interpretations and inventive approaches to Beckettʼs work. With over 25 Beckett titles they have toured to over 85 cities globally. they are true ambassadors of Irish culture.\n\n \nThe artistic directors Conor Lovett (and Judy Hegarty Lovett (Best Director Award Irish Theatre Awards) join us for an intimate evening of performance and chat around their work and Beckett’s.  Their prior visits to New York includes several performances at Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival\, The Public Theatre\, Signature Theatre and of course The Irish Arts Center. In 2024 they produced Waiting for Godot with Rainn Wilson and Aasif Mandvi at Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles and next year they’ll make a new Irish production of Godot with Conor Lovett joined by Gary Oldman and Stephen Dillane.  In 2026 they produced a 6 hour performance of Beckett’s exceptional novel How It Is in an art gallery during Venice Biennale and they premiered an opera called The Last Tape based on Krapp’s Last Tape and scored by Mihalovici.  This will next be performed at Redcat in Los Angeles in January 2027 and features tenor Mark Padmore and Conor Lovett both playing the lead role along with Grammy nominated Elaine Kelly conducting and Judy Hegarty Lovett directing. \n\nThe End is one of Conor and Judy’s favorite Beckett works: its adapted from a short story where the narrator describes life after being dismissed from a care home. Full of his signature comedy it is one of Beckett’s most poignant and arresting pieces it confers great dignity on its narrator and as a result on those around us to whom life has dealt a bad hand – it may well change the way you look at the world.\n \n‘We’ve had the privilege of being able to live with Beckett’s words almost daily.  It’s changed who we are and it has also led us to create a special community worldwide who support and promote our work so that more audiences can experience how we see Beckett’s work.
