The Irish and the Erie Canal: Building the Empire State, Binding the Nation

September 14 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Free

Thousands of Irish immigrants were recruited to build the Erie Canal’s most dangerous and challenging sections, enduring grueling dawn-to-dusk labor under perilous conditions. The most difficult struggles were in the Montezuma marshes and in Lockport, where Irish laborers risked life and limb blasting through miles of solid rock. Without their relentless grit, this monumental project might never have succeeded, delaying a massive transportation revolution that slashed shipping costs and bound the nation together by connecting the East to the Midwest. This talk tells the stories of these unheralded Irish builders—the true driving force behind the engineering marvel that transformed America.
